Journey to Scotland: A Long-Awaited Venture – Chapter 7

Journey to the Isle of Skye

After an exhilarating and exhausting day exploring the Orkney Island, we packed our bags and set off for our next destination, the enchanting Isle of Skye. The journey stretched before us, winding through the rugged beauty of Northern Scotland, with only a handful of stops to rest and refuel.

Altnahara Hotel
Our first pause came mid-morning at the historic Altnahara Hotel in Sutherland. Nestled in a remote corner of the Highlands, the hotel exuded a quiet elegance, its walls echoing stories from over two centuries of leisure and sport. We savored a light, informal tea of teacakes, sweet breads, coffee, and tea—while gazing out at the wild landscape that surrounded us.

Ullapool, Fishing Village
Continuing along the famed NC500 route, we hugged the north coast, passing through forests and catching glimpses of dramatic coastal vistas. By late lunch, we arrived in Ullapool, a charming fishing village where my daughter and I opted for hamburgers and chips at a small outdoor eatery. Unfortunately, the meal missed the mark—the hamburger was overcooked, and the chips (fries) lacked their expected crispness. Still, our spirits lifted as we wandered into a delightful bookstore across the street, a true highlight of the day.

Arriving on the Isle of Skye
The afternoon unfolded in a tapestry of green glens and sweeping views, each mile bringing us closer to the Isle of Skye. When we finally arrived, the evening air was cool and fresh. After dinner, we strolled along the street outside our hotel, admiring the distant mountains silhouetted against the twilight, with boats gently bobbing in the foreground. The promise of tomorrow’s adventures—exploring the Isle of Skye, traversing the legendary Scottish glens, and visiting Fort William—filled us with anticipation and excitement.
