Journey to Scotland: A Long-Awaited Adventure — Chapter 3
Exploring Edinburgh: A Day of History, Culture, and Celebration
From Royal Mile Wonders to a Traditional Scottish Ceilidh
Our first full day in Edinburgh was a captivating mix of history, culture, and Scottish tradition. We began our morning on the iconic Royal Mile, winding our way up the cobblestoned streets to the majestic Edinburgh Castle. Walking in the footsteps of our Royal Ancestors, including Mary Queen of Scots and her sons, made the experience truly meaningful for my daughter and me.
Touring St. Margaret’s Chapel, the city’s oldest standing building dating back to 1130, was a highlight, connecting us to centuries of Scottish heritage. Descending the steep, almost vertical hill, we paused to browse the charming shops, serenaded by the soulful melodies of bagpipes echoing along the street.
After grabbing a quick bite for lunch, we made our way to Holyrood Palace, founded in 1128 by King David I. The story of his miraculous escape from a charging stag and subsequent gratitude added another layer of mystique to the place. Once a guest house, it evolved into a royal residence, and just weeks before our visit, King Charles had entertained 8,000 guests there. The palace’s immaculate gardens and breathtaking interiors, adorned with remarkable architecture and artwork, exceeded every expectation.
We returned to our hotel, feeling both tired and exhilarated, eager to refresh ourselves for the evening’s festivities. Dinner and a show awaited us at Ghillie Dhu, a stunning restaurant and bar repurposed from a historic church in the heart of Edinburgh.
The night was dedicated to a lively “Ceilidh,” a Gaelic word for a social gathering filled with music and traditional folk dancing. Our charismatic host, clad in full tartan regalia, led us through an evening of Scottish entertainment. As we savored an elegant four-course meal, we enjoyed live bagpipe performances, listened to the poetry of Robert Burns, and watched the spirited Highland Fling.
The night culminated with everyone joining in song and dancing together in true Scottish folk fashion. Exhausted but brimming with joy, we returned to our hotel, already anticipating the adventures ahead at St. Andrew’s, Blair Castle, and the legendary Loch Ness!
